IN MEMORIUM of BILL RUSS
by Jean Anderson
Donna Russ’ husband, Bill, passed away on April 15th.  Donna & Bill have been supporters of the club for years.  Donna told me that Bill was a kind & gentle person.  He watched their money like a hawk &, like everyone else, hated “tax day”.  So, it’s somewhat fitting that he passed away on that very day.

I remember riding with them 2 or 3 years ago.  Bill was on a mule.  All of the sudden, I noticed Bill’s saddle was listing to the port side…..very slowly.  Then it finally just shifted & there was Bill, on the ground.  I had to laugh.  You should have seen the look on his face.  He just laughed.  Bill was that type of person.
There was a gathering on Saturday the 21st at Jerry & Mary Caswell’s to celebrate Bill’s life.  A very nice showing of friends came to support Donna, her daughter & grand daughter.  And many of them were from the Cave Creek Saddle Club.
Donna, you are in our prayers.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Hello Everyone,

Special thanks to Gina Mazella for her informative presentation about horse nutrition at our last meeting. She had some great giveaways in addition to the usual coupons.

The last meeting of our calendar year on May 15th presents an opportunity for those of you who would like to see change and, or, status quo, by nominating a member in good standing to office that you feel is best suited to the position.

Some officers have offered to remain on board and others have decided to step down. All nominations must be submitted to me by Thursday, May 11th. An open vote will be taken at the meeting and elected officers will be installed at the September meeting. The positions include: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, Event Coordinator and Trail Coordinator. Of course, we all appreciate the hard work and dedication of those remaining and outgoing persons.

There will also be two volunteer appointees:

Refreshments Chairperson who will be responsible for setting up refreshments at each meeting and monitoring volunteers to donate treats.

Membership Chairperson will be responsible for welcoming, tracking new members and maintaining the membership spreadsheet.

In addition, with a large amount of money in the cashbox, I think it apropos to designate a sum to a worthy cause.  We are open to any and all suggestions. Please attend the meeting to make your recommendations.

This next meeting is the most important. I hope to see you at the meeting.

Susan

Lost Dog Wash Report (second hand) by

Jean Anderson

I do wish to preface this as being a "second hand" ride report, since I was not on the actual ride.
First, I wish to THANK Claire Miller for her leading this ride. Claire is the McDowell Sonoran Preserve Manager, and when I found out I could not ride for a while, I asked her if she would. Of course, she said yes. She brought two of her friends with her as helpers.
Ferrell and I met the riders at the Lost Dog Wash Trailhead at around 8:15 AM. The City of Scottsdale can be mighty proud of this trailhead which had horses in mind when designing it. It is totally "Green"; using Solar and
"Green" building materials.  After a "meet and greet", Claire talked about the trail.  At about 9AM the 14 riders headed out.  It was a beautiful day for a ride: sunny and around 78 degrees. All 14 returned.

Fiesta Days Parade & Horse Heroes’ Luncheon Report

by Jean Anderson

Thursday, the 12th of April, Ferrell & I attended the ceremony at Harold’s to announce the new Horse Heroes.  As it turned out, we (I was one of the judges) chose two males, Steve Jurewicz & Louie Majors.  And the female was Michelle Muller.  Both Steve & Louie were very important people involved with the Cave Creek Trail System.  Louie donated some of his acreage in Cave Creek for a trailhead.  Steve was instrumental in actually building the Cave Creek Trail System.  Michelle has been working with rescue horses & brings them together with autistic children.

Congratulations to all of our 2007 Horse Heroes.

The Fiesta Days Parade was held on Saturday, April 14th & started at 9AM.  The parade had over 100 wonderful entries.   The Cactus Shadow High School Band was in the parade.  There were a lot of floats & horse drawn carriages.  One carriage was driven by the First Male Horse Hero, Terry Smith.  A large flat bed held some of the past Horse Heroes.  There was a beautifully decorated, white carriage drawn by matching black Friesians.  The stagecoaches from Harold’s, Pinnacle Peak Patio & a new restaurant in town were also present.  And, of course, the lovely rodeo queens were astride their horses, too.

The parade lasted until about 11AM & then we headed to the new Circle D Restaurant for lunch & to celebrate with all of the Horse Heroes.

Our thanks go out to Peggy Dyer Brock for all her hard work on the Horse Hero Project.  And thanks also to the all of the sponsors.

SEASON FINALE RIDE  SATURDAY, MAY 5th @ 9AM CAVE CREEK    RATED 1.5

The May 5th ride will mark the season finale trail ride and Cave Creek trials initiation by the Cave Creek saddle Club. We will meet at the Ziskovsky- Doerzbacher properties and ride the newly finished School House Road and Spur Cross Road trails. (Both these trails need a fine coating of manure and hoof prints.) For this event our honorary ride leader will be Bambi Muller, the Town of Cave Creek Trails coordinator. After the ride there will be a lunch of hamburgers and such at the Doerzbachers'.

The ride will start at 09:00 AM, Saturday, May 5th from the Ziskovsky- Doerzbacher properties.  It is a level 1.5 ride. But, there is a steep hill (about 20 feet high) on School house Road and we will be climbing Ocotillo Hill which is a steep and rocky trail. The Willow Springs section of the trail is mostly rocks and boulders with steep side hill sections. The ride will take 3 hours. Bring water and sunscreen and expect temperatures in the 90's.

Directions to the Ziskovsky- Doerzbacher properties: Go 1.3 miles north on School House Road from Cave Creek Road. Large Trailers….Turn right on Ridgecrest Road & go to Frank’s at 6636 E. Ridgecrest.  A few small trailers can turn right on Highland which is a little further up the road.  Then go to Bob & Nancy’s at 6711 E. Highland.

Since the purchase of groceries is involved,

please RSVP to Bob Doerzbacher at 480-575-1012  by May 3rd.
