PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Hello everyone,
We had a wonderful month for rides. The Breakfast
Ride in early January was a huge success. Delicious breakfast, great
trail ride and glorious weather! Our Secretary, Jean Anderson had a
mishap before the ride out and is on the mend! Thanks to Barb for
managing the breakfast, and Cindy and Rik for leading the ride.
Thanks to the Doerzbachers and Frank Z. for
arranging the "gymkhana" and to Barb, again, for the chili fest on
the 24th!
A special thank you to the club members who
showed up at the Cave Creek Board of Adjustment meeting the night of
our cancelled meeting. It was standing room only. The public comment
got emotional from those who opposed the shooting. The decision by
the Board of Adjustment was to deny Herb Natker his appeal to
abolish mounted shooting in the town of Cave Creek. Mr. Natker was
advised to seek legislation in this matter with the Town Council.
Stay tuned for more! It's not over. I will be giving a detailed
report at our next meeting on Tuesday, February 19th. We will also
have Patti Fenner speaking, who is Noxious Weed Manager for the
Tonto National Forest. The forests will be closed to all hay that is
“NOT WEED FREE” in the coming months. Come and learn more about how
this affects all of us.
Happy Trails,
Susan
ASHA Notes from Jean Anderson
The Annual ASHA Bud Marley Roping to be held at
Horse Lovers’ Park (North of the CAP, South of the 101, on Tatum
Blvd.) held on March 1st & 2nd, 2008. It starts at 9 AM.
Cash prizes will be awarded on Sunday, March 2nd.
A group of concerned horse owners in Flagstaff
are forming the Coconino Horsemen’s Alliance. They asked that ASHA
send some reps to their meeting. President Chip Wilson,
VP/Membership Ed O’Brien, Treasurer Mark Van Horn and yours truly,
met with them on Tuesday, January 29th. The main concern is that the
county is allowing the Coconino Fair Grounds to deteriorate. We gave
them pointers on how to meet with the town & county decision makers.
This affects a variety of horse people that use the facilities.
Unfortunately, not all “urban” people support the rural lifestyle.
This is a WAKE UP CALL for all of us. Flagstaff is not alone.
Supporting ASHA gives us the force to be heard.
If you haven’t joined ASHA, please do so, NOW.
ASHA (with the Farm Bureau) is also trying to
re-work the Maricopa County P&Z, with regards to the “right to use”
of horse properties. We’re attempting to encompass a “Code of the
West”, being that horse properties have the right to ranch, raise
livestock, and do certain equine “things” on their own properties.
Non-equine people should remember that they’re moving into an area
that has livestock. So, they’ll hear an occasional “MOO, NEIGH, BRAY
or BAA”
& that
the most of the roads will NOT BE PAVED.
Happy Trails......……………………………………………Jean

Ride Report by
Cindy Ramsey
Saturday, January 12th we had a great campfire
breakfast. Then we headed to our trailers to get ready. At approx.
10:00 Jean Anderson & a horse she had trailered to the ride, had an
unfortunate encounter. She lost. A call was made to 911 & they
took
Jean to the hospital. Fortunately, nothing was
broken. But she’s still feeling a little pain from the incident.
The ride headed out at 10:30 with 28 riders. It
was beautiful day on the trail. And, fortunately, there were no
further mishaps.

Event
Report by Jan Blake
Look out, Craig
Cameron. Your “Extreme Cowboy Races” got nothin’ on us.
What a fun time
we had at the Doerzbacher/ Ziskovsky Trail Course, January 26th. It
was a beautiful day & everyone seemed to have a lot of fun testing
their steeds. Some tested better than others. (For example….Did you
see that adorable white mule? Wasn’t she a hoot?) Seriously,
though. Everyone performed amazingly well…especially considering the
addition of a few new obstacles. (Pin the tail on the donkey??
That white mule said, “Ouch. That looks painful. No thanks.” LOL)
After the obstacle course, several people went on to take a nice
ride out in the dessert.
Did I mention the
food? Very very tasty.
Thanks to Barb,
Frank, Bob & Nancy for all your hard work. Let’s also give a big
“Thank You” to neighbor, Lou, for the use of his arena. And, of
course, congratulations to
Joanne Cox & Leigh Barthen, who were our grand
prize winners. Good job!!!

Sunday,
February 17th Bronco Springs Ride @ 10AM
The ride
is mostly level, with gently sloping trails, and will be rocky in
spots. There are some hills and a couple of short ledges (no worse
than Cave Creek Recreational Park). This is an intermediate, level
3 ride. We'll leave at 10:00am sharp, ride out about 1-1/2 hours,
stop for lunch, and return. There are no ATVS to worry about on the
trail. There is ample parking, water, restrooms & a few
corrals.
Directions:
From Phoenix, take Cave Creek Road north through Cave Creek and
Carefree. Soon after passing through Carefree, the road will enter
the Tonto National Forest and become FR 24. The road is dirt, but
passable in a sedan during dry weather. (During wet weather, a high
clearance vehicle is recommended, but passage should be avoided when
the washes are flowing.) The Bronco Trailhead is located on the
right, about six miles from the National Forest boundary.
