Thanks - Giving!
November is here and it begins a time when we
are all so very grateful for many people, animals and in general
things that surround us. Horseback riders can be thankful for
a good horse, beautiful countryside, great friends and community.
Let's take a minute and enjoy the events planned for November.
Join us for the fish fry at Harold's on the 14th. Mount up
in friendship as we share the trail with the Lone Rangers on the 15th-16th
or the Tonto Forest Camp Creek ride on the 22nd.
Even if you don't get to these events - go hug
your horse and thank him/her for taking you on many beautiful
trails.
Wishing all of you a Thanksgiving of sharing and
friendship.
Cindy
PS. Don't miss the meeting on November 18th to
listen to Amy Ford from the Cave Creek Recreation Area.

Celebrate
the new trailhead at Sophie's Flat.
The Wickenburg Conservation Foundation is
determined to save the trails around Wickenburg and finally, with
invaluable help from the BLM, the first of several non-motorized
trail systems will open with rides, hikes, a fabulous barbecue,
entertainment, free raffle tickets and loads of fun.
We hope you will all come out to show your
support for the WCF's work to preserve our wonderful outdoors.
Marcy will send you a map when you
register.
Come one, come all!! Sophie's Flat is less than
5 miles NE of Wickenburg (3 miles on Constellation Road
and 1.5 miles on Blue Tank Road)
Please pass along to everyone that space is
limited at the trailhead so the larger clubs/groups that may have
more than 15 riders are encouraged to
either share trailers or use the day use
parking and/or overnight campground across the street from the rodeo
grounds off of
Constellation Road
(managed by the Town of
Wickenburg).
It is free for day use
parking and $5.00 per campsite at the
campground (no facilities) which accommodates approx. 3 truck
w/trailers or RVs.
First come first served.
Anyone interested should contact me to get a map
of the horse trail that will take them from the parking area to
Sophie's Flat which is less than 2 miles.

GREG’S RIDE REPORTS:
Granite
Mountain
Reservoir Ride
Though it was a bit of a drive for a day ride,
it was well worth it. The weather couldn't have been better,
actually a little warmer than expected. There was great
changing scenery throughout the ride which was especially nice in
the canyons with the leaves turning. The ride was about 4 hours with
a half hour lunch break. See the ride pictures on the website.
Thanks to all that came.

Night Riding (excerpts taken from article by Jennifer Nice)
Horses have excellent night vision, especially
if there is some ambient light present from the moon and
stars. Although the equine eye
takes longer to adjust to changes in light than the human eye,
horses are
able to
maneuver at night just as well as they do during the day once their
eyes acclimate to the dark.
Your horse should adjust easily to night
riding, but you may encounter some problems yourself. One
problem you may encounter is eye strain and the other is vertigo.
When little or no light is available,
focus on your horse’s ears. Even if they are dark-colored,
they will still be close enough for you to see
their outline. Attach a few glow sticks or a
red LED light to the front of your horse’s breast collar or to the
bottom of the cinch. This will
provide enough light to illuminate the ground just beneath your
horse and will not interfere with your
horse’s night vision.
Secure both ends of the glow sticks with
a strip of duct
tape so they don’t swing.
You can also
attach miniature glow sticks (no more
than one inch long) near
the
dock of your horse’s tail with transparent tape. This will
help you stay a safe distance from the horse
in front of you, but they are small enough to
prevent their light from being annoying. Never wear a
headlamp.
It will interfere with your horse’s night vision and the movement of
the light may actually
spook
your horse. Carry a small flashlight in your saddle pack.
It will come in handy if you need to read a
trail sign or make a tack adjustment. You
should wear reflective gear and/or light-colored clothing. Remember,
because a horse’s eyes adjust very slowly to changes in light, it
may take as long as 10 to 15 minutes to regain his normal night
vision after seeing car headlights. Remember, your horse can
see
just fine in the dark and probably knows the
way home, even if you don’t!
HAPPY
TRAILS!
