PRESIDENTS LETTER

How can it be February already?  January has been such a busy month and February is looking the same.   We greatly appreciate the Equine Massage and Health program that Sue Davis provided in January and have more programs lined up: February will be Saddle Fitting and March will be about trailering safety.

There’s been several new members join us and I’d like to say a big welcome to them.  Several of you have already been attending many rides and events.

Snakes have been sited, even in this cooler weather so please be careful out there. I’ve heard about some ornery ones.   Have you considered snake training your dog?

Please take a read through the newsletter as there’s lots of fun activities planned.  Hope to see everyone on the trail real soon.

UPCOMING CLUB MEETINGS

Programs

February 3 - SADDLE FITTING AND MORE
Paula and Mary Ann will continue our saddle fitting discussion from last spring. They will be bringing in various saddles and trees to help us understand what to consider in selecting the proper saddle. Topics they may also cover is what aids are available to better fit the horse. Several members have requested information on care of tack so they hope to cover that also.

The ladies have requested that everyone bring a question that we can put into the hat and draw out to address. Please think of specific questions you would like answered.

March 3 - TRAILER SAFETY
Soleil Dolce from Arizona Equine Rescue Organization (AERO) will talk on trailering safety.

RIDE REPORTS

Mary Sutherland Clinic: We had 10 participants and about 8 auditors for this all day clinic.  There were all types of horses and experience levels.  Mary worked well with each individual to help them build a better partnership with their horses.   There is discussion that we may do a Day 2 in March or April to move forward with the concepts.  More information will be shared later.

Emery Henderson:  There were 10 riders on this ride as well, it was a semi cloudy cool day and warmed up as the sun got higher.  We moved right along and had lunch at the windmill/water tank.  Due to hunters and target shooters the group kept a higher profile on the hill sides versus the wash that was planned.   Everyone had a good ride.

News from the AZ Horse Council

I wanted to wish you all a very Happy New Year. I did not submit an article for January; my bad!!

The new board members, plus all incumbents, were elected to the 2011 AzHC Board. We are now 12 people; all volunteers. Our new 2011 officers are: President, Ed O'Brien; Vice President, Chip Wilson;
Secretary, Linda Slay; Treasurer, Angie Villa.

The Arizona Horse Council, AzHC, presented a power point presentation to the AG/Water Committee of the Arizona State House of Representatives, on Thursday, January 20th. Each of the members of the committee commented on why they were on this particular AG/Water Committee. ALL represented some farming, ranching; ALL actually came from families who were ranchers, farmers, too. Our AzHC
Lobbyist, Robert Shuler, introduced Ed to the committee. Ed presented each member of the committee with a copy of the power point, so that
they could follow the entire presentation. Our President, Ed O'Brien, gave the presentation, with a few board members, present.

This presentation was very IMPORTANT because the ARIZONA HORSE INDUSTRY is important as a viable economic entity. The horse industry generates over 1.75 BILLION (adjusted for 3% inflation). Horses provide 15,000+ jobs for Arizona, through: direct human to horse interaction, equine care and medical, horse services and products, equine manufacturing, horse focused sports, and equine related art and
literature.

The bottom line is that horses are interwoven into our history, culture and economics, and are a huge benefit to each. The Arizona Horse Industry is well positioned for sustainable growth when obstacles are removed. Horses bring Equi-Tourism to Arizona from the United States, Europe and around the globe, and generated $25 Million in revenue from 13 Dude Ranches in 2008-2009.

AND, remember, horses are GREEN. Please visit our web site @
http://www.arizonahorsecouncil.org
If you have not yet sent in your 2011 dues, PLEASE do so. We represent YOU, the horse owner.

Happy trails,
Jean
