HAPPY NEW YEAR AND MANY HAPPY TRAILS IN 2009!

I hope that you all had a great holiday season, got a couple good rides in, and kept warm and dry.

January will be back to full swing for CCSC. There are 3 very different events planned plus the meeting on January 20th.  The first ride isn't even down the trail - it's a team sorting clinic on the 18th.  These are always fun and there is a little competition amongst us.  Come watch if you're not participating.

The following weekend (1/24) we'll head out west of town for the Estrellas where K and Teresa Rogers will guide our group in their backyard - Estrella Mountain Park.  Many thanks to them for doing this ride.

Then a new adventure.  On January 31 we're going to support the Maricopa County Trail system and ride out of the new Anthem Trail Head on Desert Hills just west of 7th Avenue. The ride will take us West under I-17 and over to Pioneer Village for lunch and then a ride back to the trailers.  Non-riders might like to join us for lunch.

Additionally, most of you got a separate email about the fantastic Feb 14 Travis Tritt concert at Westworld.  We hope that lots of you will come and we can make that a club outing.  If you have any questions on this one, call Barb.

Whatever you do - Hug your horse and look between his ears as you head down the trail.

Happy Trails,    Cindy

RIDE/ACTIVITY REPORTS:

Bill Thelander will be hosting a Valentines Day ride from his and Donna O’Connell's home on Saturday February 14th. Our second ride for February will be on Saturday the 28th in the Table Mesa area just north of New River off I-17. Details for both rides will be in the February newsletter.

Norm Adams has offered to host a ride in the Apache Junction area in March.

I've had some good input for some other rides and will be setting those up once I return home from the holidays (as of this writing, I'm freezing with relatives in the Chicago area). I'm grateful for any ride input and want to thank the hosts that have volunteered, but we’re always looking for more.

January 20 Tuesday 7:00 pm  Meeting at Harris Bank

Guest Speaker:  Conservation in Action – The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy

Join McDowell Sonoran Conservancy Executive Director Ruthie Carll and Equestrian Patrol Chair Sue Livingston as they share MSC’s plans for future.  The discussion will also touch on current activities and how the community is involved in conserving a living treasure, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

The Arizona Game and Fish Department considers the McDowell Mountains and surrounding Sonoran desert the most significant wildlife habitat in the Valley outside the Tonto National Forest.  Completion of the Preserve is important because it will provide an uninterrupted wildlife corridor from the McDowell Mountains to the Tonto National Forest, and is key to the survival of many of our diverse desert species.

The Preserve was established by the City of Scottsdale in 1995. Currently, 16,000 acres are preserved while another 20,000 acres remain within the recommended boundary that voters approved for inclusion within the McDowell Sonoran Preserve. When complete, the Preserve will total more than 36,000 acres of permanently protected desert.   The McDowell Sonoran Conservancy works side-by-side with the City of Scottsdale to complete, manage and facilitate the use of McDowell Sonoran Preserve. When completed, the McDowell Sonoran Preserve will be one of the largest urban preserves. The Preserve will be larger than Tempe and Paradise Valley combined.

January 24    Saturday Estrella Mountain Park ride

10:00 am  Ride TimeLocation: Estrella Mountain Park    http://www.maricopa.gov/parks/estrella/Directions.aspx

January 31  Saturday     Anthem Trailhead to Pioneer Living History Village for lunch

10:00 am  Ride Time

Where:  Trail begins at Anthem Trail Head
Directions:
11th Ave. and Desert Hills Drive – just  east of the fire station.   For many it's easiest to go Carefree Highway to 7th AVENUE, north to Desert Hills and left to fire station.

This should be 5 to 6 hours (including an hour for lunch).  Expect a leisurely stroll type ride.
This is a super fun ride rated at 1+.  Great footing and lots of straight trails.  There are a few obstacles: the trail leads UNDER the overpass at I-17 (lots of car noise) , water crossing at the overpass, sirens at the fire station and large boulders to pass beside (the boulders are placed at the trail entrance).

Please bring a halter/lead rope to tie up at lunch and $$$ so you can eat too!

There is enough parking for 15 trailers. (10 parking spots in the parking lot and 5 additional spots on the east side of the entrance road off the pavement in the dirt).

For any non-riders that want to join us for lunch, aim for noon and hold our place.  Please sign up so we can give the restaurant an idea of how many.

To Reserve your spot go to the website at www.cavecreeksaddleclub.org  - click on events and sign up - or Call Cindy Ramsey 480-488-8444
