Ride year 2009,
Wow,
is it really almost over??
We've
had some great rides, some cancelled ones too. I want to thank
you all for the support you've given our club this past year.
Thank you to all of those people that stepped up
as officers and designated leaders. Rhonda, your newsletters
have been fantastic. Barb, your events will be missed.
Greg, thank you for keeping track of the rides even with your busy
schedule. Andy, your keeping the website going is greatly
appreciated.
To all our
elected officers, it's been wonderful sharing
the leadership of CCSC with you this past year and I look forward to
our continued partnership for another year. Yes, we’re
fortunate that all of the officers have agreed to stay on for one
more year! Oh wait, you do have to vote us in though! So
that will be on the agenda at the May meeting.
We do have some new volunteers for the other
duties. Sandy Luedke will be doing the newsletter in her spare
time. Jan Blake has volunteered to be the events coordinator
and we're still looking for a trail coordinator. Welcome
aboard Sandy and Jan.
I truly hope we'll have a large turn out for the
May meeting to close this ride year with a party.
Again, thanks to all.... have many happy
trails this summer and we'll see you in the fall.

CCSC member Soleil Dolce gave a wonderful and
informative presentation at the April meeting regarding the Arizona
Equine Rescue Organization and the state of rescues in today’s
economy.
One of the CCSC members asked a question
which Soleil did not have a chance to address and her response is
below:
Update on HB 2178 - Equine Rescue Registry
This year the state legislature is currently
processing an update to the statutes for an Equine Rescue Registry
that has already been approved through the House of Representatives.
The Registry was an attempt by the horse rescue community and the
Arizona Department of Agriculture to work closer together. In
Arizona
when a horse is picked up by a Livestock Officer as a stray or a
seizure they are required by law to fulfill a holding period
followed by taking the animal to the next public auction. The horse
rescue community met over a year ago to discuss how they could
provide better support to help the horses going through this
process. The first step was determined to be a voluntary
Registry where rescues met certain criteria to become an official
resource to the Arizona Department of Agriculture. In this
Registry rescues would pay a nominal annual fee and provide
documents, such as proof of their 501c3 status, a letter from a
veterinarian, and several other pieces of information, to prove they
meet a minimum set of standards. If a horse rescue chooses to
participate in this Registry they will be listed on the state
website and Livestock Officers can refer them to the public whenever
it is appropriate. Several rescues, members of the Department
of Agriculture, representatives from the Arizona State Horseman’s
Association all met to work through the wording of this bill as a
first step in a process of providing more options to Livestock
Officers when they are dealing with equine calls. Last year equine
related calls rose 23% for the AZDA and there were 106 more
abandoned horses than the prior year for a total of 651 strays
horses in 2008.
