PRESIDENTS LETTER

Welcome back on the trail and as you can see, we have a great new place to hold our meetings. Your officers, trails and event coordinators and a few extras had a great meeting in August to make plans for the new ride year. I believe you’ll be pleased with our plans. At this meeting we discussed the possibility of moving to a new location and we unanimously voted to become members of the Foothills Community
Foundation. This membership will allow CCSC to utilize the facilities, AV equipment and will also have added community benefits and visibility. They are having their Grand Opening in October, however the meeting space will be available in September for CCSC.

Let’s share a minute about what you can expect at meetings over the next couple months. The September 15th meeting will be a fun get together at the new meeting location and we will share the plans for the next few months. October’s speaker will be from the Scottsdale Mounted Police Unit, November we will host Sue Davis. Sue teaches the massage classes for SCC. These will all be at the new location
on 60th Street South of Carefree Highway.
Of course there’s no meeting in December but we’re making plans for a fun Christmas event.

January will be Saddle Fitting. We will be using “real” horses so the meeting will not be at the usual location. More to come on this later.

I will soon be emailing out a trails survey. We truly need your help to identify rides and especially to lead us on a ride. As club members and riders you all have areas you are familiar with and we hope you’ll share some of those special places with us. If anyone questions a ride and how difficult it will be, please ask. We try to be informative in the description; however, it’s your job to know yourself and your horse and what is suitable.

Please join us for a great year of friendship and trails. Be safe, have fun!

I hope to see you very soon.

Cindy Ramsey
President

FROM OUR TRAIL COORDNIATOR

Hello fellow club members! Wow, here I am, a trail boss, and no one is more surprised than me. I have to admit I’m enjoying researching new trails and am very pleased by the number of jewels I’m finding right in our corner of the world. I am very much looking forward to mixing things up this year-- I hope we explore many new trails together and I’d like to see more planned rides on our calendar. My only ‘order of business’, as I see it, is to beg for ride leaders—we are, amazingly, booked through October but after that we’ll be in desperate need of scheduled rides and leaders. If anyone is anxious or even willing to share a trail with the club, GREAT!! Contact me and I promise we will do all we can to assist you in a successful ride.

I am hoping to convince a couple club members to do a few classic favorites such as Cherry Hill, Verde River below Saguaro Lake, Camp Creek to the falls, any of the Maricopa Equestrian friendly parks and Granite Mountain, just to name a few. In addition, I’m looking for riders with some knowledge of the following: the foothills of Paulden; the trails near Dewey; Morgan City Wash near Roosevelt Lake (ghost town and cemetery optional); Jacob’s Crosscut near Goldfield; Alamo State Park north of Wickenburg; China Dam/Jackass Flats also near
Roosevelt; Fossil Springs Wilderness, 30 miles SE of Camp Verde; Oaks and Willows Trail #3 in the Bradshaw Mtns and Towel Creek Trail #67 south of Gen. Crook Hwy, just to start. I have close to 50 ‘more’ trails of interest, all two hours or less fromCave Creek-- we will not want for trails this year assuming we can find a few good leaders.

One last note-- I have a wonderful Arizona horse stable/ B&B/ campground guide. Any club trips that near or exceed two hours in drive time, I will try to suggest accommodations for those who prefer to spend the night. Step up! I am not above torture to ensure a good club season. So smile, volunteer, and be glad we’re finally back in the saddle! And special thanks to Lucy and Carla for all the help they have
promised in the ‘ride’ department!

Jeannie Forst

Hi Everyone,
Looks like it's that time of year again. Goodbye summer... & back in the saddle. Yippppeee!!!! We're going to start this season off with a "Welcome Back" Fish Fry at Harold's on Friday, September 18th at 6:30PM. If you'd like to come & re-kindle your CCSC friendships, please give me a call by Wednesday, the 16th, so that I can include you in our reservation.

Sounds like Jeannie's got some great rides planned. And Donna (my trusty assistant) & I are working on some events that we hope everyone will enjoy.

If all goes well, we'd like to try some Horse Soccer,Team Sorting Nov 1st, a Trail Trial, a Halloween party/dinner at the Chip, another Fish Fry or two & maybe even a Pizza Party.

So start thinking about those costumes. And start working up your appetites...not only for food, but for a good time too. By the way, we're very open to activity suggestions. So please give me a call, if you have any ideas. Let's make this a great CCSC season.

Happy Trails,

Jan 480-707-8211

UPCOMING CCSC EVENTS & RIDES:
All times are subject to change – Please RSVP on the website

Date: Sept. 27th Sun. 8:00 a.m. ride-out Location: VERDE RIVER NEEDLE ROCK WASH Level: 2 Length: 4-5 hours

This is a turn-around ride in a sandy wash. With hopes of cooler weather, I am planning a close ‘first’ ride along the Needle Rock Wash at the Verde River. This is a quiet trail that twists and turns over 26 miles. We will ride as long as weather and our summer weary horses allow. Pack a lunch. Thanks to the river, water is available for the horses at the beginning and end of the ride. Porta-potties are also available. Please note this ride does have one predictable obstacle—ATVs in and around the river near the mouth of the wash--if your horse is fearful, you may want to walk the short distance INTO the wash.

Directions: Take Dynamite Rd east to the end. Turn left into the Rio Verde Recreation Area. Go straight approximately 12 miles toward Needle Rock. Just BEFORE the road takes a sharp and obvious dip downhill toward the river (there will be porta potties directly on your left), turn right between the iron rails into the campground and park in the wide open area near a set of porta potties. Because the road is occasionally little washed out, allow ample travel time.
Special Considerations: Parking requires a $6.00 Tonto Day Pass. The purchase sites for these passes have been extremely unreliable—visit www.fs.fed.us/r3/tontoor call the Cave Creek Ranger District at 480-595-3300 for current purchase locations. Suggestion: obtain your pass before the 27th. Also, as an fyi, discounts will apply if you possess a Golden Age/Access Passport Card. Please note Tonto passes are NO LONGER available at the river entrance.

Please RSVP on the website www.cavecreeksaddleclub.org or to Jeannie Forst. Questions: contact Jeannie Forst at 480-473-0378

“Ready to ride?”

Date: Oct 3rd Saturday 7:00 p.m. sharp Cook-out only: 8:30 p.m. Location: SPUR CROSS MOONLIGHT RIDE Level: 2 Length: 2 hours.

Bob Doerzbacher has graciously volunteered to lead our first moonlight ride. Plan on traveling wide, lovely trails, followed by a hot dog cook-out provided by the club. Bring three dollars along as there is a honor-pay station upon entering the park, unless you have a Cave Creek pass.

Directions: Cave Creek Road to Spur Cross; go north. Spur Cross Rd becomes a dirt road—keep going until you pass a well marked ranch on the left and a horse rental facility on the right; veering right, parking is just beyond the rental facility on the right. Both riders AND non-riders need to RSVP on the website or to our activities coordinator, Jan Blake, at 480-707-8211 so she knows how many dogs are needed for roastin’. Questions: contact Bob Doerzbacher at 480-575-1012

Date: Oct 10th Saturday 9:30 a.m. Location: TOWN OF CAVE CREEK EQUESTRIAN OPEN SPACE EXPLORATORY TRAIL RIDE Level: 2 Length: 4 hours

Please note: Mark your calendars!! Reservation forms and fees MUST be received no later than Oct. 5th!

This is an opportunity to enjoy a guided tour through the newly annexed and rezoned “Open Space Lands” trails within the town of Cave Creek. Riders have the option of beginning the ride at either Spur Cross or the Cave Creek Park. Both groups will converge at the Roger’s Wash Annexation Area for a picnic lunch at approximately 1:30 p.m. The cost is $20 and includes a boxed picnic lunch, free admission to the park of your choice, the guided tour and a “Join the FORCE Open Space” t-shirt. Registration forms, as of this writing, are NOT available online. Please contact Teresa Vine or Bambi Muller at the Town of Cave Creek, 480-488-1400, with questions and to receive your forms in time for submission. Forms will also be available at the September 15thSaddle Club meeting.
