PRESIDENTS LETTER

Thanks for our horses, thanks for the trails we share and thanks for FRIENDS!

It’s finally here. Gorgeous weather, happy riders, busy horses and time to join in for your favorite trail rides!  You’ve already had a taste of our club activities with the great hot dog roast/potluck.  Thanks Sue for putting that all together.  The fabulous facility, America West Quarter Horses was such a treat.  And Susan’s ‘Back In the Saddle’ ride was a great lead in to our season.  Thanks to you also Susan.

As I type, I’m anxiously awaiting Sandy’s Grapevine Canyon ride as I missed it last year.   Hopefully Sandy will add a report as she prepares your newsletter.

The programs have been off to a great start and we thank Dr. Slagel for his presentation in October to inform us about ‘back country medicine’.  He gave lots of helpful hints in what to do and not to do.  He also emphasized how to evaluate each situation, so that we can do the best possible thing for an injured person.   Dr. Slagel has offered to do an all day course for us.  Let me know if you’re interested.

The November 4th meeting will be on nutrition.  Our guest speaker will be Julia Montgomery of Four Peaks Equine.   Julia is also bringing Patty Young from Nutrena who will also talk about equine nutrition and the new Cargill mill in Arizona.  You can look forward to some door prizes.

Please plan ahead as we look into the holiday season.  Pre-riding for the Christmas ride will begin soon.  The Saguaro Lake area is so pretty and we will be seeing some gorgeous views from various points around the lake.  Remember you do need to sign up ahead and send a check as your reservation for the Christmas Ride and Party.  There will also be a gift exchange for anyone wishing to participate.

And, for all you cow lovin’ folks, yes we are going sorting.  Sue has set up your first sorting clinic this year on December 18.  You’ll need to sign up for this also as we do have to guarantee a head count.   This will be at a new location in Rio Verde area.

Please remember, there is NO MEETING in December.

Wishing all of you a thanksgiving November.

Cindy Ramsey

President

MEETING PROGRAM

November 4th – Nutrition

Julia Montgomery of Four Peaks Equine will be our primary presenter.   Julia is hoping to bring along some of the reps that she works with.

Tentatively you can expect to hear from Brady Karren from Arenus Equine who will speak on Minerals in horses.  Patty Young from Nutrena will also talk about equine nutrition and the new Cargill mill in Arizona.

You can look forward to some door prizes.

RIDE REPORTS

Moonlight Ride

The October 23, 2010 Moonlight Ride was a huge success thanks to all who participated.

Fabulous hotdogs (thanks to Chefs Sandy and Charly) and a wonderful potluck dinner was served at American West Quarter Horses (AWQH) ranch. Ride out was at 6:45 pm under a rising moon. Moonlight riders rode for 1-1/4 hours in the through the McDowell Mountain Regional Park (MMRP) desert.
The ride was cut a bit short of the original plan due to an unanticipated MMRP event which, most likely, would have impaired our safety.  All 18 riders and horses returned to their trailers after the ride without incident.

Thank you all participants for cleaning up.  The ranch kitchen area and grounds were impeccably clean when we left and Stacie Stewart, AWQH ranch owner, was very pleased!

Special thanks go out to John Hansen, Jules Dale, and Jack Parks, who worked tirelessly marking the trail and leading the ride; and to Greg LaCosse and his friend Lyle Suttill, who provided musical and cowboy poetry entertainment.

CCSC contributors generously donated $170.00 for the Cowgirls Historical Society, as requested by Stacie Stewart of AWQH.

Grapevine Canyon

As each CCSC ride approaches the excitement and anticipation builds for all us horse enthusiasts, but I believe the Grapevine Canyon ride is quickly becoming one of the clubs favorites. We were 19 strong as we headed out, up, and onward, traversing at least three different vegetation zones. We began our ride methodically picking our way through the brush and rock of the high desert chaparral environment, just outside of Mayer. Tom and Ward our guides, regrouped us for the next leg of the journey and quickly had us zigzagging and climbing up and into the thick and rather colorful, juniper/oak/pinyon pine component of the biome. The transition from the dry woodlands into the ponderosa pine forest was dramatic and simply a magical experience for us desert dwellers.

Upon reaching the pine forest, we tied our horses and congregated on various logs to eat our lunches and chat a bit. It was interesting to discover our troop included both long time club members such as Frank Ziskovsky and Pat Smillie (a member since the 60’s), as well as brand new members like Evelyn, Cassie and Amy. We really are a very diverse group, but we have one thing in common, our love of horses.

Did I mention the wind? More than one of us was forced to dismount and retrieve a hat or cap along the trail or deep in the brush. The gusts gave a new meaning to “hold your horses” and “hang onto your hat”. Despite the wind, we all worked our way down the hill, meandering through some washes and under the cottonwoods back to our trailers. This ride is one of my personal favorites, and I am grateful to Tom and Ward for making it possible. I’m hearing some or you would like to make it one of our annual events. Yes!

NEWS from the Arizona Horse Council

Equine Rescue Registry Accepting Applications

September 22, 2010

The Arizona Department of Agriculture has announced that the Equine Rescue Registry is accepting applications from certified Equine Rescue facilities.  Certified Equine Rescue facilities can now be listed on the Equine Rescue Registry found on the Departments website.

The application for listing is located at http://www.azda.gov/ESD/equinerescuefacilityapp.pdf.

Certification and listing on the registry allows the public to easily find Equine Rescue facilities that meet veterinarian approved standards of care.  This will lead to more secure homes for abandoned or unwanted horses in the future./span>

The issue of abandoned horses in Arizona is one with which we are all too familiar.  The number of abandoned horses has skyrocketed in the United States.  It is estimated that the annual number of abandoned horses is over 100,000 per year.

In 2009 the Arizona Horse Council working with representatives from the Equine Rescue community were successful in having legislation enacted to create the Equine Rescue Registry.

This year the Arizona Department of Agriculture created a set of rules to implement the new law.  The new rules went into effect July 5, 2010.

The Arizona Horse Council encourages all interested Equine Rescue facilities to take advantage of this opportunity.

If you have any questions please contact Chip Wilson of the Arizona Horse Council at 602-390-6806 or mattgriffis@arizonahorsecouncil.org.
