MEETING PROGRAM

October 7th – Wilderness Medicine

Dr. Kirk R. Slagel is a Wilderness Medicine Instructor and will share some critical strategies and essential skills necessary to handle many of the common, and not-so-common problems encountered in the backcountry as well as in the back yard.  Horseback riding in remote areas, whether you are riding for the afternoon or on an overnight trip, offers unique challenges to anyone who may sustain an injury. Large animals, challenging terrain, limited resources and the injured rider all need to be wisely managed to return home safely. Backcountry First Aid gives you the skills necessary to handle many of the commonly experienced soft tissue and musculoskeletal injuries, along with environmental exposure and assaults from our biting and stinging, flying and crawling, sometimes not-so-friendly, friends.

Dr. Slagel will provide an informative overview of Backcountry First Aid, interspersing anecdotes and experiential wisdom from over 30 years of participation in the outdoor and medical professions.

Dr. Slagel wants you to know that he has a Backcountry First Aid class scheduled for October 9 and 10.  If you are interested, please check his website. www.drslagel.com

November 4th – Nutrition

Julia Montgomery of Four Peaks Equine will be our primary presenter.   Julia is hoping to bring along some of the reps that she works with.

Tentatively you can expect to hear from Brady Karren from Arenus Equine who will speak on Minerals in horses.  Patty Young from Nutrena will also talk about equine nutrition and the new Cargill mill in Arizona.

You can look forward to some door prizes.
