RIDE REPORTS

Saturday, April 16, 2011/9:00 am

McDowell Mountain Ride from American West Quarter Horses

Ride Leader:  Sue Van Meerten -

13 riders rode out from the AWQH ranch at 9:00 a.m. and we rode for 2 hours, beating the heat!  After a very brief ride on a dirt road, we rode in the beautiful desert before heading back to AWQH.  We saw lots of gorgeous McDowell Mountain views.  There were many places where riders could ride side-by-side so this was a very social ride.  Positive feedback from riders was that the trail had very few rocks and the hills were easy to climb.  Special thanks go out to Jack Parks and Forrest Marsalis who tended gates, and to Jeannie Forst who was our drag rider.  10 riders brought a picnic style lunch and we all ate together in the ranch's BBQ area.  AWQH ranch owner, Stacie Stewart, surprised us with Red Velvet Cupcakes that were indescribably delicious!  At the request of Stacie (for use of the ranch and facilities) donations were made to the Historical Cowgirls Foundation.  Feedback from Stacie is that she is very impressed with the CCSC and we are welcome to host future events at AWQH.

Sunday, May 1, 2011/9:00 a.m. Ride Out
Ride: Sonoran Conservation Area – Maricopa Trail

Ride Leader: Jules Gunter - For questions contact Jules Gunter at cell 623-516-0655 or home 623-210-3968
Level: 2 ˝ to 3
Ride Length: 2-1/2 – 3 Hours

Description: 80% of this ride is on the newly completed and beautifully groomed Maricopa Trail. There are ups/downs but footing is great. There are also areas that are a bit rocky. Although this is an easy ride, you and your horse must be able to cross some fairly deep washes and go up and down a couple of rocky and steep hills. We have been invited to bring our lunches and sit on the patio by the pool after riding. There is a grill and our hosts will have side dishes (pasta and salads) and will do burgers and sausages on the grill for those that want.

Directions: The ride will be held at Jules home at 25612 N. 7th Avenue. This is on the north side of Deer Valley Air Park. From Cave Creek Road and Deer Valley – go west to 7th Street. Turn north on 7th Street and continue as it turns left onto Happy Valley Road. Go to 5th Avenue, (first right after Central). Turn right on 5th and it will curve into 7th Avenue. 3rd house on left, parking in lot south of the house. Turn around for bigger trailers. Signs and person directing parking will be there. You can also reach this ride off I-17.

Ride: Rio Verde Southern Ride

Level: 2
Ride Length: 2-1/2 Hours

Description: Fairly flat ride to South Rio Verde River for some gorgeous views. We'll head south and west through desert trails. It is likely we will see truly wild horses which are mustang descendents. Although this is an easy ride, your horse must be able to cross some fairly deep washes and go up and down a couple of rocky and steep hills

Directions: Take Dynamite Rd east to the end. Turn left onto dirt road (north). Take the first right toward the Box Bar Ranch and/or Rio Verde Saddle Club (heading east). Where the road curves and heads southeast/south, park on left-hand side of the road. Signs and person directing parking will be there. Sign up on the website if you plan to go on this ride. Arizona Horse Council – Jean Anderson

In my article for Arizona Horse Council in our CCSC Newsletter in April, I erred: I made mention HB 2552 (agricultural property tax classification) and the fact that it was signed by the governor, and now it was in the hands of the IRS. The IRS part is the error. The bill went to the Arizona Department of Revenue for language. The AzHC, plus the Cattlemen's Association and the Farm Bureau, will continue to add verbiage to this bill to ensure that the equine property tax classification is worded properly. Our lobbyist will also attend these sessions.

Thanks to all who supported our Poker Ride on Saturday, April 23rd, 2011. We had 19 riders, and 31 for lunch. Many thanks to John and Pat Manes, and to LInda Slay, both John and Linda are AzHC Board Members, for all of their hard work. Matt Griffis, also an AzHC Board member, and Rick Villa helped with the cooking, and was the food great. The Poker part of the ride was such fun, too. We gave out raffle prizes, too. Many, many thanks to all the businesses who gave us the prizes. I might add here that some of us stayed at the parking lot to make sure the lot was clean of all horse manure!! (so the park people had NO excuses!!)

During the actual Poker Ride, there were several instances where there were challenges with bicyclists. Ed O'Brien, President of AzHC, has asked each of the board members to write an article each month for the Horse Connection, and my month is June. I will be writing my article on Trail Etiquette, and also mentioning the name change of our ASHA - Equine Education & Research Corporation 501(c)(3) to Arizona Horse Council -  Education & Research Corporation 501(c)(3).

Happy Trails.

Jean
